People & ideas at Deutsche Börse
Release date: 11 Feb 2021
In our “Settled in” series, our colleagues who have decided to start their careers at Deutsche Börse Group share their journeys with us. Surbhi transitioned from an internship at Eurex in Chicago to a position in Equity and Index Sales in London and is sharing her experiences.
Before you started your first permanent position, you interned at Eurex in Chicago. Why did you choose to do this internship?
I was already studying MSC Finance at Stuart School of Business and going through the process of researching and applying for various internships. Considering the market, it became very evident to me that Eurex as an exchange is one of the key innovators in today’s environment and integrated technology in a way of capturing the inefficiencies and creating disruption in the industry. I wanted to be a part of the leading exchange and contribute to this growth.
And how did the experiences you made during your internship contribute to your growth – both professional and personal?
My internship at Eurex helped me become more mindful, independent and to grow as an individual. The variety of tasks and a chance to work with strong, different and diverse personalities gave me a chance to induce more flexibility in my way of working and helped me make quick decisions. The office was professional but at the same time very fun-loving. That was all that I really needed to enjoy my time at Eurex and to also continue working at the company. At the end of the day, it felt very rewarding to apply academics in real life. Moreover, it provided me with a platform to fulfil tasks relevant to my desired career path. I got the opportunity to spend time sharpening and honing skills that I already possessed.
You now work in Equity and Index Sales at Eurex in London. What are your main tasks?
I am covering London prop firms and my main tasks are to provide our clients access to and the knowledge about the broadest spectrum of equity and equity index derivatives, create new relationships and deepen existing relationships with key decision makers. This requires a deep understanding of the product portfolio but also a broad understanding of the market structure relative to those products at the prop firms. My job also requires me to act as a liaison between customers and other Eurex departments such as Product Development and Strategy, Market Structure and Pricing in order to facilitate discussions and ensure customer feedback is thoroughly coordinated.
What do you value the most about working at Deutsche Börse Group?
Smart, confident, bold and daring – these four words aptly describe the people, the leadership and the culture at Eurex. The organization is built on trust and hard work – my managers make me feel valued by inspiring me to be a better version of myself each day. And that itself makes me feel like an integral part of this organization.
Diversity, inclusiveness and compassion is what I value the most about Deutsche Börse.
If you would have the chance to give advice to other young people who are just starting their career, what would it be?
Be flexible and adaptable, grab every opportunity you can. Work hard and help others! When you help others, you learn how to do various things yourself. Enjoy the work and the people you are working with and for.
