People & ideas at Deutsche Börse
Release date: 04 Jun 2024
In our “Settled in” series, our colleagues who have decided to start their career at Deutsche Börse Group share their insights with us. Originally from Albania, Romina Shehaj has decided to move to Germany in July 2023 to join our Xetra/Eurex Database Operations team, which is part of our Trading IT. In this issue, she talks to us about her journey, her experiences working in IT operations and what advice she would give young women who would like to pursue a similar path as her.
What motivated you to start a job in a new country?
I am a person who always wants to progress and seek the best of possibilities. I thought it was the right time in my life and my career to look for a new challenge abroad and Germany was my preferred choice. When the opportunity to join Deutsche Börse came, I was sure it was going to be an amazing experience and so it is.
What are your main tasks and responsibilities in your current role?
I am part of the Xetra/Eurex Database Operations team and we are responsible for the operations and deployment of risk applications as well as the database administration. Here, my main focus has been working on a new containerised, cloud-native risk application that is currently being built. My day-to-day operational responsibilities also include incident response, maintenance activities, and the monitoring of acceptance, simulation and production systems.
What do you find most challenging and what most rewarding about your job in IT operations?
The most rewarding part about my job in IT operations is that I am constantly developing new skills – I am always on a growth path. To me, it is always a creative, dynamic, and engaging field to work in. The flexible working environment and possibilities to also work remotely at Deutsche Börse are further positive aspects about my job. Of course, sometimes it can also become challenging and time pressure can arise when you have to operate production systems. But working with the right team makes things easier and the result is more like a reward.
What advice do you have for young women who would like to pursue a career in IT like you?
I want to strongly advice every young woman who sees herself as a future IT engineer to go for it. Don’t be intimidated by a room full of men as it is being proven day by day that it is not only a man’s job, but women can do it just as well. The flexibility offered in the IT industry is unlike anything I have seen in other industries.
